As time progresses, there has been a gradual increase in the age that men and women choose to have babies. This phenomenon is due to a variety of factors that has an effect on social and family life, which will be further explored.

In this day and age, women are becoming more independent in pursuing their own careers, not to mention supporting themselves. They do not merely rely on men to take care of their needs, which pushes back the age when they begin to be interested in starting a family. Furthermore, people are currently living longer and they prefer to enjoy their youth rather than devote most of their time to offspring. Moreover, the cost of living is increasingly higher, whereby raising a kid costs an arm and a leg, thus young people cannot bear the financial burden of raising children. There is also a rising trend of a greater number of students attaining higher education, indicating more time spent focusing on their studies rather than creating a family.

Having children later on can lead to a more stable family life as parents are mature and experienced in rearing offspring. Furthermore, children of older parents tend to be better educated as they benefit from the advances of technology made during the period of delayed childbearing. Nonetheless, there is a larger age gap between parents and kids, which could create disagreements when children grow up. Moreover, there is an increased risk of health issues for newborns and their mothers who delay pregnancy including the development of disabilities, deformities and even miscarriage.

All in all, there are a variety of contributing factors explaining why men and women are having children later in life ranging from the independence of women to increases in longevity, living costs and education levels. However, these aspects can stabilise family life and produce more educated children. Nonetheless, a generation gap may form between parents and kids and there might even be health issues for newborns and their mothers.
